Dana Upgrades steer Axles

by Tire groups lobby for reserve pressure capacity requirement for tires

Dana Corp.’s Commercial Vehicle Systems Division has made across-the-board improvements to its line of Dana Spicer Integral Arm Steer Axles.

Topping the list of new features is a two-drawkey and spring washer kingpin retention system and a new, more robust beam forging design. They combine to improve total vehicle alignment and add durability to the axle. A new, patented Power Rib beam further results in lighter weight, while also improving vehicle handling during braking. Better handling results from reduced caster change during braking as a result of the stiffer beam design.

The patented compressible kingpin inserts, previously offered as part of an LMS steer (kingpin and tie rod) package option, are now included as standard on all the new axle models. This means lube intervals for linehaul applications can be extended up to one year or 100,000 miles.

The upgraded steer axles also include an improved integral arm knuckle design. The one-piece forging includes the steer arm, tie rod arm, and spindle. Dana says this design yields a more reliable axle, a 55-degree turn angle, and a lightweight, compact package.
