Drag-racing lead to death of ‘most gentle’ trucker

DETROIT – "Vinasithamby was the most gentle person I have ever come across in my life.”

That is how Hardeep Mann, the owner of Indo Can Logistics Inc., a Mississauga trucking company, described his driver Thayalan Vinasithamby.

Vinasithamby, 44, was killed Tuesday in an Interstate crash that took place, according to police, because two cars were drag racing.

According to media reports, the cars were racing on I-94 when one lost control and hit Vinasithamby’s truck, which veered off the highway, up an embankment and into the back of a store, where it burst into flames.

Police say the 19-year-old driver who smashed into Vinasithamby’s truck was driving with a suspended licence and might be charged with negligent homicide. The second driver may also face charges.

Vinasithamby died at the scene and leaves a wife and daughter, 9.

Driving was actually a weekend job for Vinasithamby.

Arriving as a refugee from Sri Lanka 23 years ago, he spent his weekdays working in a tool-and-die company. After this week’s accident, his colleagues at the tool-and-die company quickly raised $7,000 for the driver’s grieving family.

Indo Can’s Hardeep Mann told todaystrucking.com that he is currently investigating the possibility of setting up a trust fund.
