Drug and alcohol testers merge
TORONTO, (Dec. 3, 2004) — DriverCheck Inc. and HealthStar Enterprises Corporation have integrated their drug and alcohol testing businesses, through the recent acquisition of HealthStar by DriverCheck.
The new entity becomes Canada’s largest player in the drug and alcohol testing industry, commanding about 75 per cent of the market for drug testing services. The move is supported by the Canadian Trucking Alliance and its provincial associations which initially set up HealthStar.
Dr. Barry Kurtzer, president and senior medical review officer at HealthStar since its inception, takes on the position of Chief Medical Review Officer and will play a predominant role as expert witness should the need arise. DriverCheck President Dr. Chris Page will continue to perform the MRO function along with Dr. Kurtzer, giving clients access to the two most experienced MROs in Canada.
The company’s say that as a result of the merger, clients will enjoy additional benefits, including:
— The ability to connect clients to a web-based electronic management system (eManda) which will allow clients to manage their entire program online and confidentially access results hours sooner than the old-fashioned email/fax system.
— Higher combined lab volume will allow them obtain the best prices possible at a time when lab costs are rising dramatically due to imminent U.S. regulatory changes, the company says.
–Higher volumes and increased shipping density will translate into improved turnaround times for all clients, an absolute priority in the months to come.
— Dr. Kurtzer and Dr. Chris Page will be sharing the MRO duties so that a senior MRO will always be available.
