BERWICK, N.S. (May 11, 2005) — Eassons Transport Limited of Berwick, N.S. has been awarded the North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Committee’s award for Outstanding Achievement Award for Large Company or Organization.

The award is presented to a company or organization with 50 or more employees that has made an outstanding contribution to the promotion of occupational safety and health in the province of Nova Scotia. It also recognizes significant innovation or leadership in a single development or event, or may recognize many years of influence and leadership in the community in the promotion of workplace safety and health.

Eassons — led by brother trio Peter and Paul, together with President Tom Easson — has participated in the development of training institute standards that guarantee graduates have received all the proper safety training and have undergone an internship component where they receive actual hands on training. The company has also recognized the need for a full-time safety coordinator and has many incentive programs in place. The Easson family and their staff are also known to share occupational health and safety information with other industry firms.

The brothers say they foster a “lead by example” management style, as did their father, William Easson, before them. They say this motto has proven to be imperative in implementing a company safety policy and program and encouraging a culture that promotes safety in the workplace.

Eassons’ reputation as a health and safety-conscience fleet was cemented in 1999 when it set up a safety association for the trucking industry in Nova Scotia. Easson’s former Safety Director, Steve Bennett was the chairperson of the Nova Scotia Trucking Safety Association at the time of his death and the Steve Bennett Memorial Safety Award is presented annually in his honour.
