East coast ferry hikes fuel surcharge

NORTH SYDNEY, N.S. — After its most recent review, Marine Atlantic will apply a fuel surcharge to its route between Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador beginning later this month.

The crown corporation reviews and sets the fuel surcharge on a quarterly basis. A fuel surcharge of 13.8% will be applied to all new reservations for travel commencing on or after Oct. 26.

The fuel surcharge is applied to the cost of transportation (passengers, passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles). It is not applied to accommodations and services on board of the vessels.

Fuel costs will be reviewed again in December 2009 for an update in January 2010. The fuel surcharge is designed to recover the amount the Corporation spends on fuel in the current fiscal year compared to the amount spent on fuel in 2006.
