East Coast Truckers Get Money for Essential Skills Study

TRURO, NS — The Canadian government is providing $640,000 worth of funding to Trucking Human Resource Sector Council Atlantic (THRSCA) to launch a study of literacy and essential skills levels of employees in the trucking industry. The hope is that a plan will be created to help employers address workplace challenges.

Today’s announcement came from Member of Parliament Scott Armstrong speaking on behalf of Diane Finlay, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development.

“The Government of Canada and the trucking industry are partnering to ensure more employees have the essential skills required to succeed in today’s economy,” says Armstrong.

The study will look to better understand the impact literacy, adult education and essential skills may have on safety, productivity and employment patterns.

From the study, THRSCA will create a plan to help employers address and combat these challenges in the workplace.

“We are aware that low essential skills levels can impact safety performance,” says Kelly Henderson, Executive Director of THRSCA. “This project will allow us to work with multiple partners, including the Province of Nova Scotia, to explore this relationship and identify a plan companies will be able to implement.”

Money for nothing, essential skills for free.
