Event data recorder proposal extended to trucks

WASHINGTON — A rule proposing event data "black boxes" following Toyota’s recall crisis could be extended to heavy and medium duty trucks if a U.S. senator gets his way.

The Senate recently introduced a bill part of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act, which would address data recorders in the passenger vehicles.

According to the American Trucking Associations, Sen. Tom Udall (D-N.M.) introduced an amendment to extend the requirement to commercial trucks as well.

The ATA said it’s generally supportive supportive of event data recorders, provided they aren’t used against carriers in post-crash litigation.
