PeopleNet updated its onboard computing and mobile communications systems last month, including eDriver Logs, the company’s paperless process for managing driver hours-of-service records.

eDriver Logs is now available in “smart” mode, which automates the recording of a driver’s duty status based on whether the vehicle is moving or stopped using a combination of GPS location and engine diagnostic information. Outside of “smart” mode, drivers indicate on-duty/off-duty/sleeper berth/driving status through a Palm-based handheld device or message display. The information is available to the driver, dispatcher, or compliance officer online through PeopleNet’s Fleet Manager interface. This allows drivers to present up-to-date logbook information on demand.

Among the other upgrades: the system now automatically captures the location and the amount of fuel consumed during PTO, idle, and off-road events; and a new “Activity Standards” reporting tool can track and measure the efficiency of recurring and/or dedicated routes and activities, giving quick notice of deviations from normal travel times, stop times, average speed, and planned stops.

These upgrades are free and take place through wireless communications and online–no vehicle downtime required. Contact PeopleNet at 1-888/208-8110, or visit www.peoplenetonline.com.
