FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. — Production was halted at the Albian Sands Muskeg River site north of Fort McMurray after explosions rocked the recently opened plant.

The Shell-owned plant experienced an explosion early Monday morning in the solvent recovery unit of the Northern Alberta oilsands plant.

Emergency crews spent two hours getting the blaze under control, but there were no serious injuries. The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board says it appears the blaze was caused by a mechanical problem.

The company is reporting there was no environmental damage but production has been temporarily shut down. The plant began production just over a week ago.
