Federal government allocates $54 million for Newfoundland highway projects

ST. JOHN’S (Jan. 4) — The federal government will kick in $54 million for 18 different highway improvement projects in Newfoundland during fiscal year 1999-2000.

The deal is part of the Newfoundland Transportation Initiative Agreement signed by the federal and provincial governments in 1988. The agreement expires in 2003.

Transport Minister David Collenette said the department will provide approximately $31.5 million under the Trans-Canada Highway Agreement and $22.5 million under the Regional Trunk Roads Agreement for these projects. The funds will be used to begin new projects or complete existing ones. Tenders for the projects will begin immediately, he added.

This year’s initiative will create over 900 direct and indirect jobs, Collenette said.
