Feds agree to fund N. Ontario highway twinning

KENORA, Ont. — A much-hyped plan to twin the Trans-Canada throughout Northwest Ontario moved closer to reality last week.

The project is part of the $6.2-billion infrastructure agreement Ottawa and the province announced last week. It prioritizes the proposal to four-lane Highway 11/17 near Thunder Bay and Kenora.

The first phase of funding is earmarked for "route planning" of Highway 11/17 to the Manitoba border.

Other projects listed for Northwestern Ontario include:

Engineering work on the Highway 11/17 corridor from Thunder Bay to Nipigon as well as a major five-year rehabilitation of the Noden Causeway on Highway 11 near Fort Frances.
