Feds promote trucking to young Quebec job seekers

MONTREAL — Transport Canada is trying to lure Quebec youth into transportation sector jobs, including truck driving.

Transport Minister Jean-C. Lapierre announced the launch of a brochure and of a website specifically aimed at Quebec’s young people.

The brochure, entitled A Job in Transportation, a Destination of Choice and the Web site www.tc.gc.ca/youth/quebec, are designed to make Quebec’s young people aware of careers in the field of transportation, while helping this sector cope with an expected shortage of labour and prepare a new generation of workers.

Gov’t hopes new website makes trucking attractive to youth

The brochure was developed in conjunction with the Quebec’s sectoral committees representing the four modes of transportation: aviation, rail, road and marine.

Although demand for transportation services is on the rise, the workforce is aging, the number of new recruits in the transportation field is diminishing and specialized workers are lacking in certain areas, the government says.

“World class, sustainable transportation systems, such as Canada’s, require the vision and energy of an innovative transportation sector, driven by a highly skilled workforce,” said Minister Lapierre in a press release. “This initiative reflects the Government of Canada’s commitment toward encouraging job market newcomers to select a transportation career.”

By clicking on to the website’s trucking sector link, interested job seekers can learn more about the trucking industry in both Quebec and the rest of Canada. “Thinking of a job in road transportation? 3,800 truck drivers are needed for 2004-2005 with even greater demand in coming years,” the site states. “Deciding to become a heavy vehicle mechanic, a dispatcher or a truck or bus driver means taking on an exciting career! And companies are welcoming new recruits with open arms. This means young people can count on finding work once they’ve completed their training.”

The section contains detailed industry background info, as well as job placement rate and pay scales. It also promotes the industry with several testimonials from current Quebec truckers.
