Fergus Show a Go!

FERGUS, Ont. — Doubts about the future of the popular Fergus Truck Show have been dispelled as CFO Wayne Billings said the organizers — forced to relocate for the 2009 version of the four-day show — have narrowed their search to two possible locations.

"We’ll announce our final choice January fifth," he told todaystrucking.com. "But the important thing to know is, the show will go on."

Fergus, which is just outside Guelph in south-central Ontario, has been home to the popular show for the past 23 years but fell victim to its own success. It got too big for its acreage.

This year the organizers learned that some of the neighboring farmers from whom they rent parking and show property would not be re-entering the agreements. Rumors of the show’s demise circulated.

The board had some quick meetings in the fall and announced that they would have to relocate from the municipal property.

This week, a relieved Billings said the search is over.

The Fergus show bills itself as one of the largest truck festivals in North America. Financially, the show is in good shape. The 2008 version raised over $45,986 for charity.

It’s also seeing bigger crowds thanks in large part to big-name Canadian entertainment acts such as April Wine, Kim Mitchell and David Wilcox. The space, therefore, is essential to accommodate the 70,000 visitors that gathered in 2008.
