Filching Fuel: Diesel targeted by thieves

BRANTFORD, Ont. — At today’s fuel prices, the next great caper movie won’t be set at a bank, but instead a trucking company.

Black gold is becoming as valuable as the real stuff, and thieves are taking notice. Siphoning gasoline and diesel from tankers and storage facilities — especially trucking yards — is quickly becoming a phenomenon in the U.S., but that doesn’t mean it’s not happening north of the border too.

According to media reports, there’s been a rash of fuel heists in Canada lately. Just this week, reports the Brantford Expositor, more than $18,000 worth of diesel fuel was stolen from a local trucking company yard.

Thieves entered the front gate, pried the coupling off a storage tank and stole about 11,000 liters. Another 2,000 liters were scoffed from two tanker trailers.

In July, thieves stole $39,000 worth of diesel from a trucking company just a few blocks away.

Anyone with information is asked to call Brant OPP at 419-442-2241 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
