Final U.S. Rule Banning Cell Phone Use by Truckers Posted

WASHINGTON — Interstate truck and bus drivers will soon be banned from using handheld cell phones while operating their vehicles.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration announced the rule today, according to truckinginfo.com.

Drivers who violate the rule can receive federal civil penalties up to $2,750 or possible disqualification from operating a commercial vehicle for multiple offenses.

States will suspend a driver’s commercial driver’s license after two or more serious traffic violations, and commercial truck and bus companies that allow their drivers to use handheld cells while driving could face a maximum penalty of $11,000.

The rule goes into effect 30 days after publication in the Federal register.
