HAMILTON, Ont. — Herbie Walker, an owner/operator for more than 40 years and the 12th recipient of the Truck News Owner/Operator of the Year Award, has died. Walker, 66, passed away suddenly on Dec. 28 in Hamilton, according to his family.

Walker got his start in the mid-’60s hauling softwood lumber for H.S. Bartram Ltd. in Stoney Creek, Ont. A few years later, Walker branched out to work for Erie Flooring Wood Products in West Lorne, Ont. At the time of his award win in Fergus, Ont. in the summer of 2005, he had been with that company for more than 33 years.

The seasoned veteran was an active humanitarian, both on the road and in his community, having helped police get dangerous drivers off the road, assisting at the scenes of accidents and participating at McDonald’s Restaurants McHappy Days.

During the weekend in Fergus, Walker was often seen with an entourage of family and friends, including his wife Shirley, the namesake of his then current truck, Shirley’s Special II.

“We’re basically a team,” he said in an interview with Truck News. “She’s not just my wife, she’s my best friend.”

And though Walker said he was touched to be honoured with the title of Owner/Operator of the Year, he told us he’d take the title of “Dad” and “Grandpa” first any day.

“For me my family is my greatest achievement,” he said. “If I could raise my children as two productive citizens, then I’ve done something right.”

The family is asking for donations to be made to the Ronald McDonald House and/or a charity of choice in lieu of flowers. Online condolences may be placed at: www.cresmountfennellchapel.com.
