MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — GE Transportation Systems (GETS) has launched what the company says its most environmentally friendly locomotive ever, the “GE Evolution Series.”

GE says the new Evolution Series of 1,400-hp, 12-cylinder GEVO diesels are the most fuel efficient ones ever built, and reduce emissions 40 per cent from current locomotives.

The $200-million locomotive program took six years of research and development.

“We wanted to not only meet current environmental standards, but exceed them," says Charlene Begley, president and chief executive officer of GETS. "The Evolution Series locomotives gives our customers a product that will continue to meet emissions regulations and save them fuel over the life of the locomotive. This is a locomotive that will evolve and serve them well over the next two decades,” she says.
