Globalstar Canada
Globalstar Canada has launched Globalstar Commercial Data Services, a two-way data satellite communication system for companies that operate in remote locations where cellular coverage and landlines are not available. The system provides a reliable, wireless Internet Protocol data link via Globalstar’s constellation of 48 Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO) satellites. The modem used for satellite communications is compatible with Microsoft Windows 95/98/2000 Dial-Up Networking and offers 9.6 Kilobits per second (Kbps) maximum speed, with a 7.7 Kbps average throughput.
Globalstar hopes the system will appeal to companies that need to track and manage equipment operating in remote areas. It cites oil and gas companies as an example: pipeline operators can supervise and control flow in real-time at multiple points without having to deploy field personnel.
Globalstar retail pricing of the Commercial Data Services will be offered at single unit suggested retail rates of $25 per month for service and usage charge is expected to be in the range of 40 cents per Kilobyte.
