Ground Freight Shipping Costs Decline Slightly

TORONTO — New figures released by the Canadian General Freight Index (CGFI) show the total cost of ground transportation for Canadian shippers decreased by 0.6 percent in April when compared to the month before.

Compared to April 2014 the index is up 3.3 percent

The Base Rate Index, which excludes accessorial charges assessed by carriers, increased marginally, less than 0.1 percent when compared to March, but it is 6.8 percent higher compared to a year earlier.

Average fuel surcharges assessed by carriers decreased for the month. Fuel was 16.04 percent of base rates in April versus 17.02 percent in March and 16.06 percent in February. The April 2015 figure is down 25.2 percent from April 2014 as the price of fuel has eased.

“Less-than-truckload total freight costs increased, driven by cross border LTL and a slight increase in domestic LTL costs,” said Doug Payne, president and COO of Nulogx, a transportation management system provider that provides analysis of the report. “Domestic truckload decreased while cross border truckload costs saw a slight decrease.”

He said April also saw some changes in trends with domestic LTL rates increasing for the first time since last June while domestic truckload and transborder truckload had their first decreases since September and July 2014, respectively.
