Happy Earth Day, dear Kansas, happy Earth Day to you

KANSAS CITY, Mo, — It’s hard to imagine a better place to introduce all-electric commercial trucks than here, in the "Show Me" state.

But the brass at the Smith Electric Vehicle (SEV) company is aiming to prove to cynics that the world’s ready for an all-battery-powered zero-emission truck.

The company announced Friday — on Earth Day Eve, if you will — that they’re building a truck factory near the airport and they expect to be producing the vehicles by the third quarter of this year.

SEV CEO Bryan Hansel says the first model will be the Smith Newton — the world’s largest battery-electric-powered truck.

Here’s the specs on the Smith Newton Truck:

Motor is a 120 kw Induction Motor; Lithium-Ion Batteries; Payload of 7,392 lbs to 16,280 lbs; GVW of 16,535 lbs, 23,148 lbs or 26,455 lbs; top speed of 50 mph; full battery recharge of six to eight hours.

SEV has already received a strong interest from fleet operators and will begin production using chassis from multiple vehicle manufacturers.

Frito-Lay North America and Pacific Gas and Electric Company have also signed on as launch partners.
