How’d ya like them apples, Granny Smith?

LOUISVILLE, Ky — They’re a colorful pair, often sighted at trucks shows around the continent or at charitable events in aid of Special Olympics

Now, Dianne “Granny” Smith and her husband Ron — stage name: Snuffy — will be pulling up to events in a bright shiny new Kenworth W900, which they won in a draw at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville last month.

Hers was one of about 10,000 names entered into the draw. And she wasn’t even at the show when her name was called. She was waiting for a bus at a nearby eatery.

"Friends of ours were over by the booth standing around waiting to see whose name they were going to call," Dianne Smith told todaystrucking.com and when they called ‘Dianne Smith,’ the gal said ‘I know that name..’ and then they mentioned the name of the city, my friend said ‘oh my gosh that’s Snuffy and Granny."

The contest, sponsored by the Great American Insurance Group, is now it its third year.

Dianne and Ron have been driving together for almost 17 years, and have just finished paying off a 2000 Freightliner Classic XL. The generous couple will be giving the rig to another owner-operator couple who is having a hard time, financially.

"It took us seven long years go pay for it but now we’re paying it forward," Dianne told todaystrucking.com. "God blessed us with the opportunity to have a new truck so we passed along the blessing."

The good deed won’t come as a surprise to anybody who knows the Smiths. The couple, who have six daughters and 17 grandchildren, often take their hillbilly musical-comedy act “Granny and Snuffy” act on the road to raise awareness and money for good causes.

Dianne is an active member of Women in Trucking and a Special Olympics Ambassador for the state.

Says Women in Trucking’s Executive Director Ellen Voie: "It’s so exciting to see that one of our member’s lives will be a little brighter and a little easier after winning a new truck, we are thrilled that it was our dear friend Dianne!"
