Humber Transportation Training Center Hits 25 Years

TORONTO — Humber College Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning is gearing up to celebrate to the 25th anniversary of its Transportation Training Center with a career fair and open house next month.

Up to 30 of the nation’s top employers will be on hand to discuss a wide variety of opportunities in the trucking industry on Saturday, Oct. 3 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Developed in response to a shortage of truck drivers in the late 1980s, the Transportation Training Centre was launched in October 1990 to provide a comprehensive program that went beyond simply teaching the basic skills necessary to get a license, according to the college.

“Teaching soft skills, cargo security, U.S. regulations and more, we focus on promoting road safety and developing graduates that are widely accepted in the industry,” said Rick Mikula, program liaison officer at Humber. “Employers don’t hire a driver’s license to drive a truck, they hire a person. Humber is in the business of developing people that meet industry needs.”

Humber offers commercial driver driving for license class G to AZ (tractor-trailer), G to DZ (straight truck), and DZ to AZ (tractor-trailer from straight truck license).

Activities planned for the career fair and open house include:

  • Promo trucks for the Toronto Maple Leafs
  • Opening remarks from Humber President Chris Whitaker at 11 a.m.
  • Free BBQ lunch at noon
  • Truck rides – experience what it’s like to be in the cab of a tractor trailer unit
  • Drawing for a free truck course, valued at $1500, and a free motorcycle course, valued at $555

The event will be at the Learning Resources Commons, 205 Humber College Blvd. in Toronto.
