Intermodal hauling sees huge rebound in ’10

CALVERTON, Md. – Intermodal volumes jumped another 17-percent in the fourth quarter of 2010 intermodal, pushing the overall annual increase over 2009 to 14.7 percent, reports the Intermodal Association of North America.

International volume surged by 18.5 percent — the highest increase since IANA began reporting intermodal statistics in 1996.

Specifically, intermodal trailer moves were up 3.7 percent in 2010 over 2009.

Total domestic volume during the fourth quarter was the highest ever recorded by IANA, topping 1.6 million loads.

Domestic container growth was up 8.9 percent in Q4, ending the year 13.3 percent above 2009 figures.

Unlike international volumes, domestic container volumes never declined during the recent recession.
