Iowa DOT officers in state police clothing, maybe

IOWA — It could get a little confusing the next time you’re hauling through Iowa.

Iowa state officials are currently developing plans to move 106 officers from the Iowa Department of Transportation to the Iowa Department of Public Safety, reported the Des Moines Register.

The DOT officers would continue to be responsible for the weighing of trucks, HOS and other regulations. But they would wear the state trooper uniform as well as drive Iowa State Patrol vehicles.

Sen. Tom Courtney, co-chairman of the Legislature’s Government Oversight Committee, said the move would be misleading to the public.

The reported reasoning behind the proposal is to amalgamate services in an effort to better serve the public.

Brenda Neville, president of the Iowa Motor Truck Association, said that this isn’t the first time proposals of this nature have been put forward, “The Iowa Motor Truck Association has been opposed to these types of mergers because these two enforcement agencies have two very distinct areas of focus,” Neville said.
