OTTAWA, (May 17, 2005) — New Brunswick will soon get a whole suite of Intelligent Transportation Systems technology for its highways, the provincial government and Transport Canada announced recently.

Under the joint federal-provincial agreement, $416,000 of federal funding has been allocated for the installation of weigh-in-motion systems at two locations along the National Highway System in New Brunswick. The Province of New Brunswick will contribute $978,703 to the project.

This new technology weighs and measures commercial vehicles without requiring them to stop at roadside weigh stations and allows enforcement agencies to pre-screen for compliance with roadside clearance requirements. It will also provide the base technology for data collection required to begin implementation of the Intelligent Transportation Systems/Commercial Vehicle Operations Deployment Plan for New Brunswick. This plan will define strategies for a coordinated approach to the deployment of commercial vehicle operations technologies throughout the province.

One of these is the Intelligent Transportation Systems initiative, which includes applications such as advanced systems for traveller information, traffic management, public transport, commercial vehicle operations, emergency response management and vehicle safety.
