Major projects on the rise in B.C.

VICTORIA — Despite the economic downturn, the value of major construction projects planned or underway across B.C. has risen to $188.1 billion, setting a record for the 19th time in a row.

“These consistent increases reflect investors’ steadfast confidence in our province’s economic recovery, as well as government’s actions to support B.C.’s construction industry during challenging times,” said Iain Black, Minister of Small Business, Technology and Economic Development.

According to the Major Projects Inventory, June 2009 edition, between April and June of this year: 882 major capital projects were planned or underway across B.C., an increase of 11 percent in estimated value from the same time period last year, when 863 major projects worth an estimated $169.7 billion were planned or underway.

The number of projects has nearly tripled since 2001, and their value has more than quadrupled.
