Manitoba hikes allowable turnpike double length

WINNIPEG — Manitoba has finally agreed to allow, turnpike double long combination vehicles (LCVs) up to 41 metres (134.5 feet) in length on approved four-lane divided highways.

Already in effect, the new allowable configuration (by permit only) consists of a tractor-trailer pulling two 53-ft trailers.

The length includes front-mounted "moose catchers," and will exempt rear-mounted aerodynamic devices like boat tails.

Months ago, Manitoba was the only Prairie province that did not increase the overall length of LCVs to accommodate the use of RTAC sleeper cabs.

Last year, Saskatchewan upped its overall length to 41 meters to allow use of RTAC tractors with LCVs. And last month, Alberta increased the length to 40 meters from 38, with a one-meter extra allowance for aerodynamic devices, on double divided highways.
