Marine Atlantic sinks fuel surcharge
PORT AUX BASQUES, Nfld. — A little late is better than never. Marine Atlantic has finally removed its fuel surcharge for commercial vehicles.
After reviewing its fuel costs in the last quarter, the North Sydney-Port aux Basques Crown ferry service says no fuel surcharge will be applied to its posted tariff rates beginning on April 1, 2009.
Although the company said it would review fuel costs again in June 2009.
Fuel prices have plummeted to nearly half of what they were in the summer of 2008.
Speaking to the St. John’s Telegram, Atlantic Provinces’ Trucking Association Chairman Gordon Peddle of D.D. Transport said the removal of the surcharge is "almost like a little stimulus package in itself."
In fact, it’s his customers who will be saving money, as Peddle and most trucking companies pass fuel surcharges on to shippers.
Meanwhile, the St. John’s Board of Trade is urging Marine Atlantic to permanently axe the fee.
