Marine Atlantic to deliver another New Year surcharge

PORT AUX BASQUES, Nfld. — For the fourth time in about a year, Marine Atlantic will increase rates in order to offset the rising cost of fuel and operations.

The North Sydney-Port aux Basques truck, cargo and passenger ferry service will implement a 2.1 percent fuel surcharge increase to the posted tariff rate for passengers, passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles. The increase takes affect January 17, 2008 and is based on one-way transportation.

The January hike will represent Marine Atlantic’s fourth increase in 12 months. Last January, the ferry hiked ticket rates. This was followed by fuel surcharge increases in July and September, which was 3.1 percent.
