Math wiz Grant-ed some financial help

TORONTO — Thanks to her strong ability with numbers, Samantha Schmidt of New Liskeard, Ont. earned a little help for her university education from Ontario’s trucking community.

The Grant’s Transport Mathematics Scholarship was awarded to Schmidt last month at the graduation ceremony of Timiskiming District Secondary School held at Northern College in Haileybury, Ont.

The scholarship is awarded annually to the graduating student who scored the highest overall average in mathematics courses, and who is bound for university.

Samantha will be studying mathematical physics at the University of Waterloo in September and has set her sights on attaining at least one post-graduate degree also in mathematical physics. A consistent honour roll student, she was a member of her school’s math and physics clubs and was a strong competitor in several math-related contests. She was a provincial medalist in the Sun Life Financial Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge.

Ultimately, Schmidt hopes to work with researchers at the Institute of Quantum Computing or the Perimeter Institute of Theoretical Physics.

“By all accounts, Samantha is a very deserving student of the Grant’s Transport Mathematics Scholarship, and we are once again pleased to provide some financial assistance to a local student who has demonstrated such an impressive commitment to her education”, says Gord Grant, president of Grant’s Transport. “It is a great feeling to be able to give back to our community in a relatively small, but important way.”

The Grant’s Transport Mathematical Scholarship, an endowed fund established by Grant’s Transport of New Liskeard, is administered by the OTA Education Foundation.
