Michigan anti-texting bill before the House

LANSING, Mich. — Ontario truck drivers who think they’ll be able to sneak a text or two on the southwest side of the border will likely notice things won’t be all that different stateside.

Michigan House panel is considering a statewide ban on text messaging devices while at the wheel. Reading, writing or sending text messages would get drivers a ticket of up to $100.

A similar proposal was approved a year ago, but stalled in Senate committee.

More than a dozen states have legislated anti-texting laws this year alone.

Next week, on Nov. 1, New York will become the 15th state to enforce a on texting while operating a vehicle.

In Canada, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Ontario, Manitoba, and Quebec all have laws on the books. Most of the remaining provinces are considering proposals and are expected to follow suit.
