St, John’s, NL — The first wildlife detection system is up and running along the Trans Canada west of St. John’s along the 1.5 kilometer stretch east of the Salmonier Line interchange.

The system uses sensors to detect when a large animal is on the highway, setting off flashing lights on a sign that reads "Moose on Highway When Lights are Flashing."

When the sensors are tripped, the lights will flash for two minutes, says The Department of Transportation.

By the end of October, a second wildlife detection system will be installed near Grand-Windsor, and wildlife fencing will be installed along the west coast.

Now, if we can only get tourists to stop feeding the bears.
