NAFTA land trade climbs again

WASHINGTON – U.S.-Canada surface transportation increased in June compared to the same month in 2010, reaching $46.1 billion, up 9.7 percent.

Overall, NAFTA surface transportation between the United States and both of its neighbors, Canada and Mexico, was 11 percent higher, totaling $77.5 billion, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

The value of U.S. land trade with Canada and Mexico rose a whopping 53 percent in two years from June 2009. However, it has still only risen 4.6 percent above the level of June 2008, the previous all-time high for that month.

Imports in June were up 49.8 percent since June 2001, while exports were up 71.2 percent.

Surface transportation includes freight movements by truck, rail, pipeline, and mail.
