NAFTA land trade up nearly 12%

WASHINGTON – Surface trade between Canada and the U.S. was up over 10 percent year-over-year in February, totaling $40 billion.

Overall, surface trade between all three NAFTA partners was 11.8 percent higher in February 2011 the year before, reaching $66.5 billion, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

However, freight value in February fell 1.8 percent from January 2011. (Month-to-month changes can be affected by seasonal variations and other factors.)

Surface transportation includes freight movements by truck, rail, pipeline, mail, Foreign Trade Zones and other. In February, 86.4 percent of U.S. trade by value with Canada and Mexico moved on land.
