National Truck Driving Championships to be held Saturday

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. — Some of Canada’s most skilled professional drivers will face off this weekend at the National Professional Truck Driving Championships, hosted by the B.C. Trucking Association (BCTA).

And for the BCTA, it must’ve felt like their opportunity to host the Nationals would never arrive. The country’s westernmost provincial trucking association was slated to host the nationals in 2001, but 9/11 curtailed those plans. And in 2009, the national event was cancelled as the global economy spun out of control.

Rather than having to wait until its next turn in the rotation, which would have been 2016, the championship committees across Canada agreed to allow B.C. to host this year’s event.

It also coincides with the BCTA’s 100th anniversary.

The association hopes for a good turnout Saturday Sept. 21 at the Tradex Centre in Abbotsford. The event kicks off at 8:30 a.m. and driving competitions will run till 4 p.m.

Competing will be provincial champions from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces. There is no charge to attend.
