N.B. cellphone ban begins April 1

FREDERICTON – You’d be a fool to use a cellphone from behind the wheel in New Brunswick after April 1.

The enforcement period of the province’s ban on cellphones and other hand-held devices, such as GPS units, begins that day. The fine is $172.50.

One of the last provinces to pass a cellphone-while-driving ban, the New Brunswick government wanted to make sure there was enough public awareness around the rule, Public Safety Minister Robert Trevors told the CBC.

Drivers will be allowed to talk on their cellphones with hands-free technology.

New Brunswick was one of the last provinces to impose rules on cellphones while driving.
