New Champlain Bridge to be Toll Free
BROSSARD and MONTREAL, QC – One of the busiest bridges in Canada will be free of tolls when a replacement span in built and opened, reversing an earlier decsion.
That’s according to Federal Minister of Infrastructure and Communities Amarjeet Sohi In an interview with the Journal de Montreal. He says the Tradeau government is living up to a campaign promise regarding the bridge connecting Montreal and Brossard.
Quebec Transport Minister Robert Poëti, according to the Montreal Gazette, has also confirmed the news.
This move comes despite an earlier agreement between the Harper government and a consortium that is building the more than $4.2 billion bridge, set for completion in about three years.
It is expected this will force the government and the consortium to renegotiate their contract, leaving it up to taxpayers to foot the bill for construction.
The current bridge has been in service since 1962 and is estimated to see around 160,000 vehicle crossings each day.
