New Ont. transport boss says challenges ‘immense’

TORONTO — Ontario’s new transportation minister, Kathleen Wynne, says she is committed to improving the flow of people and goods through the province – particularly through the busiest parts of Toronto.

In a recent blog entry, entitled "Moving Forward in Transportation," the new minister says the province’s transportation challenges are immense.

Wynne, who took over the post for Jim Bradley after a recent cabinet shuffle, has been on a learning tour of transportation-related facilities throughout the province in recent weeks.

She says it is the job of the provincial government to deal with increased congestion and "making up for lost time on the transit-building front."

"We’ve made a good start over the past few years with the sharing of the gas tax across municipalities," she writes, "but here in the GTA we have to get more transit links built across Toronto out to the east and west and north — especially to the airport.

"Those plans have been developed by Metrolinx and a big part of my job is to make sure we stay on track."

Wynne was first elected to the Ontario legislature in 2003. She served as Minister of Education for more than three years before being named Minister of Transportation early this year.
