ABBOTSFORD, B.C. — In an effort to improve border-crossing times, the province of B.C. has installed a new electronic sign on Hwy. 1 to provide real-time border information to drivers.

The Advanced Traveller Information System (ATIS) measures and displays border wait times so that commercial drivers and motorists can better plan their routes. It is located at Hwy. 1 westbound between the Whatcom Road Interchange and Hwy. 11.

The cost was cost-shared between the province and the feds.

“The Government of Canada is proud to participate in the expansion of the Advanced Traveller Information System,” said Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway. “Using advanced technologies such as this new sign at crossings along the B.C. and Washington State international border will help travellers decide when and where to cross this border and will reduce delays at these crossings.”

Officials said the new sign supports the goal to accelerate the flow of legitimate goods and people across the border.

In addition to installing the new sign, FAST lane improvements have been made at Hwy. 15, improving commercial vehicle access and an anti-idling signal system has been installed at the Peace Arch crossing.
