NHTSA extends external ABS lamp rule

WASHINGTON — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking last week, extending by 18 months a requirement that trailers with antilock brake systems be equipped with an external ABS malfunction indicator lamp.

According to the American Trucking Associations, the indicator lamp requirement, which is included in Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 121 that governs vehicles equipped with air brakes, was originally scheduled to sunset on March 1, but has been extended to Sept. 1.

Under the NPRM, the ‘sunset’ date would be extended until March 1, 2011. The proposed rulemaking also considers making the requirement permanent as requested by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance.

Comments are due to NHTSA by April 2.
