NRCan reminds truckers to stop their engines

OTTAWA — More than 60 sites across Canada are gearing up once again for the sixth annual ecoENERGY Fleets Idle-Free Quiet Zone campaign at truckstops nation-wide.

Natural Resources Canada’s 12-week campaign (December 1, 2007, to February 23, 2008) is meant to educate drivers on the harmful effects of unnecessary idling. Commercial truckers are encouraged to shut down their engines to help reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and to conserve fuel.??”This campaign shows that a simple action like turning off a vehicle can improve the health of Canadians and our environment,” said Gary Lunn, minister of Natural Resources.

It is estimated that the average sleeper truck idles approximately 1,800 hours per year, producing approximately 20 tonnes of GHG emissions per truck, says NRCan.

Participating truck stops will display information about Idle-Free Quiet Zones. In cooperation with the Government of Canada, a similar campaign was launched in the U.S. by the Environmental Protection Agency in several midwestern states.??
