NS to join fuel-regulating provinces

HALIFAX — Looking to avoid being the only province east of Ontario that doesn’t regulate fuel prices, Nova Scotia will hold prices steady on diesel and gasoline for two-week intervals, starting July 1.

Richard Hurlburt, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, stated in a press release that the government will handle the process on an interim basis, before handing oversight to a third-party review board. The regulatory process will be reviewed annually, Hurlburt added.

The policy is similar to what Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, and Quebec have in place, except that Nova Scotia’s plan includes a “built-in interrupter formula,” designed to change with the market but allowing consumers adequate warning of when prices will change.
