Oberg: Alberta must spend billions on highways

EDMONTON, Alta. — Alberta Transport Minister, Lyle Oberg, says the province will have to invest billions of dollars in its highways.

He made the comment to a Legislature committee yesterday, citing the need to increase the amount of work done on the province’s roads. He said the pace of road construction must be sped up as the state of the province’s infrastructure is falling behind.

Oberg said $2.4 billion is needed for starters, not including the $1.2 billion required to expand the Queen Elizabeth II Highway linking Calgary and Edmonton.

Oberg added Alberta still has the best roads in Canada.
