Online driver trainer, truck school offer one-of-a-kind certificate

TORONTO — Humber College Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning, in partnership with online training tools developer CarriersEdge, will offer the first college certificate designed specifically for professional drivers.

The Certificate in Small Business Management for the Trucking Industry is the first certificate of its kind in Canada. Starting September 2007, the program will be offered online and will allow professional drivers to improve their knowledge of driving as a profession as well as their business and leadership skills. The online offering will provide drivers with the flexibility to continue developing their skills while still on the road.

“Humber has provided specialized training to the trucking industry for over 15 years,” said Janis Miller, Dean of Humber Corporate & Continuing Education. “The key to our success is working with industry partners who bring expert skills to the learning environment. We are very pleased to form this partnership with CarriersEdge. Together we have developed this unique certificate program designed to enhance the professional growth opportunities for commercial drivers.”

The certificate is comprised of eight courses, which can be taken in any order. They have been specially selected to serve the needs of professional drivers and include: How To Start A Small Business; Human Relations; Small Business Bookkeeping; Border Crossing; Defensive Driving; Pretrip, HOS & Logbooks; Cargo Securement; and Transportation of Dangerous Goods.

The first three courses come from the Ontario Management Development Program, which Humber offers as part of its continuing education services. The remaining five courses are part of the CarriersEdge library.

“Many drivers would love to have a college education, but have never had the chance”, noted Mark Murrell, president, CarriersEdge. “This program allows them to get that education without sacrificing driving time, even if they never finished high school. Humber has shown tremendous leadership in crafting this program and we’re excited to be working with them.”
