TORONTO, Ont. — Ontario has received an award for having the safest roads in North America.

The Ontario Safety League recognized the achievement by presenting the Ministry of Transportation with an award. According to a report, Ontario has the lost highway fatality rate since 1931.

The province’s road fatality rate is just 0.87 per 10,000 licensed drivers, according to the most recent statistics which are from 2006.

Even with more people and vehicles on our roads than ever before, our roads are the safest they have ever been, thanks in part to our dedicated road safety partners, police, and the many Ontario drivers who are out there every day, leading by example,” said Transport Minister, Jim Bradley.
