OTA says no to ban for in-vehicle electronic devices

TORONTO — Don’t punish everyone for the habits of some bad drivers.

That’s the message the Ontario Trucking Association is delivering to the province’s transport ministry after the governing Liberals admitted last week that they’re considering a ban on cell phones and other communication devices in moving vehicles.

OTA says it has strong concerns over the proposal. "An outright ban on the use of in vehicle electronic devices in Ontario would not be feasible for the trucking industry."

The trucking lobby is suggesting a more "sensible" approach where charges would be laid for distracted driving rather than an outright ban on the use of electronic communications devices.

"Under this new law, if an officer is able to verify that someone has caused an accident or is seen to be driving erratically because of the use of an in-vehicle electronic device this new charge could be laid, but simply using an electronic communications device would not be prohibited," OTA states.

OTA says the government’s response so far has been that no final decisions have been made on how best to address this issue and an assurance that the OTA will be included in the Ministry’s consultations.
