DriveWyze Enters the Bypass Scene

DALLAS, TX. — DriveWyze is probably an unfamiliar name, but the company — a subsidiary of Intelligent Imaging — has been in the commercial vehicle space since 2003 dealing exclusively with the law enforcement side.

A software development company, they’ve been providing law enforcement with various sensors systems. Moving towards a bypass system was natural, they said during an early morning demo ride.

Available across North America in 12 states, with Alberta onboard but still in the early stages of implementation (talks are ongoing with other provinces and Transport Canada), the preclear system works off of smartphones: iPhone, BlackBerry, and Androids.

It’s a relatively simple approach: driver CDL, and for the truck the U.S. DOT number, VIN number and licence plate. That information isn’t transmittited wirelessly from the phone, but rather from DriveWyze’s back-systems. Transmitting all that info would be a security issue, DriveWyze said. It’s a security issue, so instead, a unique identifier is created and then sent from the phone to the weigh stations.

The app is pretty simple after all of the above info is punched in: one touch for when the driver starts his run, and then done. The system uses GPS to announce to the driver when he’s approaching a station from two miles out and at one mile out, the app tells the driver to either bypass, follow transponder(if the vehicle has an approved transponder for the site) or follow road signs.

Bypass rates are based on carrier safety and credential history as well as random pull-in requests by certain agencies.

The vehicles speed or real-time location is not recorded or transmitted to DriveWyze’s server.

It’s an interesting system, and one that law enforcement officials are reportedly keen on as it marries nicely to mobile inspection sites.

The system goes live August 28, at which point pricing will announced. States where the service will be available on launch are: Minnesota, New Hampshire, Pennsylvannia, Vermont, Maine, Conneticut, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. The app is free, there’s no contracts or sign-up fees.
