Poor driving conditions force highway closures

GOLDEN, B.C. — Business was good for the Husky Truck Stop here yesterday as nearly 100 truckers were stranded due to severe winter weather.

"I’m thinking we’ll all be here for a while," a cashier at the truck stop told local media after nearly 30 centimeters of snow fell in the region.

Parts of the Trans-Canada Hwy. in B.C. were closed following avalanches and some secondary highways were nearly impassable.

“Even the plows are having trouble keeping up, and we’ve been very busy with all the cars stuck on the side of the roads,” said one RCMP officer.

In Alberta, a stretch of Hwy. 2 was closed because of icy conditions which may have caused an accident involving a propane truck. Drivers are encouraged to visit www.ama.ab.ca to check out road conditions. Links to other Western Canadian provinces are provided on the AMA Web site.
