Prairies, Maritimes and Quebec have worst roads: CAA poll

TORONTO, (May 4, 2005) — A new survey released by the Canadian Automobile Association reports that more than one in three Canadians believe the country’s roads and highway system is falling apart.

Respondents say Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Atlantic Canada has the poorest road conditions, Canadian Press reports. Albertans instead appear most satisfied, with 57 rating their province’s roads as good, and only 18 percent commenting they were poor.

Almost half of respondents to the second annual poll said the condition of their roads and highways had worsened over the past year, and many more, according to the survey, want the federal government to devote more resources to improving roads and highways.

The best way, the poll suggests, would be to increase the amount of federal excise tax on gasoline that flows back into maintaining and improving the country’s road and highway system, the poll suggests.
