Province hitches on to enviroTruck

VANCOUVER — B.C.’s Environment Minister has found merit in the enviroTruck program and found some funding to provide a boost.

The provincial Environment Ministry is providing $2.5 million over three years for enviroTruck, which will be offered to fleets at $10,000 per vehicle or $50,000 per fleet for cleaner, more environmentally friendly trucks.

The enviroTruck program in B.C. is being administered by the Fraser Basin Council (FBC), in company with funding partners B.C. Trucking Association, the Canadian Trucking Alliance and the provincial government.

The $2.5 million in funding is a substantial increase from the original $70,000 announced by the FBC back in January.

The increase in funding will allow about 250 enviroTrucks to join B.C.’s road system. According to BCTA president Paul Landry it’s a small percentage of the 50,000 heavy trucks operating in B.C. The problem is that there are about 40,000 to 50,000 heavy trucks operating in B.C. and he’d like to see even more trucks with the enviroTruck tag.

"What we’d like to see is a massive enviroTruck program," Landry told the Vancouver Province. "This is a great model. It’s a great model of what can be done."

The enviroTruck model is designed to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by utilizing the latest in technology advancements including: a 2007 or newer engine, a speed limiter set at no more than 105 km/h, aerodynamic mirrors, an auxiliary power unit, centre and rear chassis fairings, low drag bumpers, full roof fairing, tractor-trailer gap fairings, trailer side skirts, under hood air cleaners, and wide base tires or fuel efficient duals.
